Short answer: no, Greyhound doesn’t allow pets on its buses, and that includes small dogs in a carrier and animals in the luggage hold.
The only exception is a service animal, meaning a dog or other animal individually trained to do work for a person with a disability, which rides free on the floor at its handler’s feet.
Greyhound puts it in one line on its baggage page, “Pets are not allowed on buses with the exception of service animals”, and its terms of travel, dated 8 July 2026, add that the ban covers the baggage compartment too.
We checked every rule below against Greyhound’s own pages and the federal rules that bus companies follow, in October 2026, and we found no exception for small pets on any route in the US, in Mexico or across the border.

Who counts as a service animal on Greyhound
Greyhound accepts guide dogs, signal dogs, seizure response dogs, psychiatric service dogs and any other animal individually trained to work or perform tasks for a person with a disability, and the federal definition that bus companies follow, in 49 CFR 37.3, isn’t limited to dogs either.
The tasks Greyhound lists range from guiding a blind passenger and pulling a wheelchair to reminding someone to take medication or calming a person with PTSD during an anxiety attack, which is why a psychiatric service dog is welcome while an emotional support dog isn’t.
No certificate, vest or fee
Greyhound’s own pages don’t ask for a certificate, an ID card or a vest, and the Justice Department’s ADA guidance says businesses can’t demand proof of certification and that online registries give no rights at all.
Greyhound doesn’t ask for advance notice either, and federal rules for bus companies forbid special charges for passengers with disabilities, so a service animal rides free.
How your service animal must ride
- On the floor at your feet. The animal can’t take a seat, sit on your lap or stretch out into the aisle.
- Under your control. Keep it on a leash, in a harness or in a carrier, unless that would get in the way of its work or your disability prevents it.
- Calm around others. If the animal threatens anyone’s health or safety, staff can refuse it or remove it at any point, and Greyhound gives no refund, lodging or onward ride.
Greyhound’s pages don’t say what a driver may ask you, although FlixBus, its sister brand, says its drivers may ask about the training your animal has received, so it helps to be ready to describe the task it performs in a sentence.
Why emotional support animals can’t ride
An emotional support animal comforts its owner by being there, but it isn’t trained to perform a task, so neither the ADA nor Greyhound treats it as a service animal.
Federal transit guidance from the FTA says bus and transit operators only have to accept service animals and can decide for themselves about anything else, and Greyhound’s terms turn away every animal that isn’t a service animal.
Airlines now work the same way, since the Department of Transportation’s 2021 rule lets US airlines refuse emotional support animals too.
Greyhound, FlixBus and Mexico
Greyhound has belonged to the German company Flix since October 2021, and since July 2022 Flix North America has run both Greyhound and FlixBus in the US, Canada and Mexico, with tickets on greyhound.com sold under the same terms.
FlixBus has the same rule, no pets and service animals only, and so does Greyhound Mexico. One FlixBus help page says emotional support animals can travel, but that contradicts FlixBus’s own accessibility page and the shared terms of travel, so we wouldn’t count on it.
Some trips sold on greyhound.com are run by partner bus companies, and when their terms differ the stricter rule applies, so check the operator named on your ticket. If you’re crossing into Mexico with a service animal, FlixBus asks for proof of a rabies vaccine given at least 15 days before entry and parasite treatment within the last six months.
Ways to travel with a pet instead
If your dog isn’t a service animal, the train is the closest thing to a bus trip, while driving gives you the most freedom and works for any size of dog.

Amtrak takes dogs and cats at least eight weeks old in a carrier of up to 19 x 14 x 10.5 inches, one pet per passenger, and the fee varies by route, so check it when you book.
Pets can’t ride on the Auto Train or Gold Runner services, or on the Canadian stretches of the Adirondack, Maple Leaf and Cascades, so plan around those if you’re heading north.
