Short answer: start with Leon’s on Upper King, Taco Boy downtown or Ellis Creek Fish Camp on James Island. All three say on their own sites that dogs are welcome outside, and Ellis Creek has a dog menu.
South Carolina lets restaurants make an outdoor area “pet friendly” if they choose, so it is always the restaurant’s call. Dogs stay outside, leashed and off the tables.
Charleston eats outdoors for most of the year. Porches, courtyards and oyster-shell patios, with a dog stretched out in the shade.
We rewrote this guide in October 2026. FUEL has closed, The Park Cafe is now Park & Grove, and two places no longer belong in a dog guide. Each card says where its dog policy comes from.
Downtown and the French Quarter
Poogan's Porch
The house is named after a neighborhood dog, and the porch is the place to be. Order the shrimp and grits it calls famous.
BringFido says dogs are welcome on the front porch, weather permitting, and Explore Charleston lists it for brunch with a dog. Its own site doesn’t state a policy.
Eli's Table
A sunny courtyard for brunch. The signature shrimp and grits come with smoked gouda and blackened tasso, and there is duck and waffles too.
BringFido says the outdoor seating welcomes dogs, with water and treats. Its own site doesn’t mention dogs.
Henry's on the Market
Open since 1932, and it calls itself the oldest continuous restaurant in South Carolina. Shrimp and grits or jambalaya on the rooftop.
BringFido says dogs can join you on the rooftop deck, using the Anson Street entrance. Thursday to Saturday it is 23+ after 8:30pm, so go earlier with a dog.
East Bay Deli
A quick, casual stop: Tessa’s Turkey or the Chief Reuben, open 8am to 8pm.
Its location page says: “Outdoor Pet Seating Available.”
Le Farfalle
Dinner only, and the patio is walk-in. Cacio e pepe or squid ink spaghetti with local shrimp.
Explore Charleston describes its outdoor seating as a place to dine with your dog. The restaurant’s own site doesn’t say, so confirm when you arrive.
Upper King and NoMo
Leon's Fine Poultry & Oysters
Fried chicken, oysters and soft serve, across several patios.
Its FAQ says: “We love when our well-behaved K9 friends come to visit us and absolutely allow them on our patio.”
39 Rue de Jean
A French brasserie with mussels and frites and a patio open year-round.
BringFido says dogs are welcome on the bar’s sidewalk patio, and Explore Charleston lists it in its pet-friendly itinerary.
Juanita Greenberg's Nacho Royale
Nachos and burritos until 2am on a covered patio.
Its site says: “We are dog friendly and smoking is allowed on the patio!” Worth knowing if smoke bothers you or your dog.
Taco Boy
A big turf patio, scratch-made guacamole and quesabirria.
The downtown page says: “Well-behaved and leashed dogs are welcome for outdoor dining.” The Folly Beach page doesn’t mention dogs.
Bay Street Biergarten
Pretzels with beer cheese, pork belly burnt ends and an on-site parking lot.
Its About page mentions “a dog-friendly patio”.
Park & Grove (formerly The Park Cafe)
Same owner and address as The Park Cafe, renamed in 2021. Brunch fried chicken with a house biscuit and hot honey.
BringFido says the front covered patio is dog-friendly, with water and the odd treat. Its own site doesn’t mention dogs.
West Ashley, James Island and Folly Beach
Swig & Swine
Hardwood-smoked pork, brisket and St. Louis ribs, open 11am to 9pm daily.
BringFido says it welcomes dogs at umbrella-covered outdoor tables, but those reviews are a few years old. Call ahead.
Ellis Creek Fish Camp
Marsh views, hushpuppies with honey sumac butter and a grouper sandwich.
Its homepage says “We are dog friendly”, and there is a dog menu with a Puppaccino and a turkey dinner.
Rita's Seaside Grille
Peel-and-eat shrimp after a beach morning, about 20 minutes from downtown.
Its menu page says “outdoor seating & pet friendly”, and there is a puppy menu.
The rule for dogs on South Carolina patios

South Carolina’s food regulation (61-25, “Outdoor Pet Dining”) lets a restaurant designate an outdoor dining area as pet friendly. It needs its own outside entrance, dogs must be restrained and under control, and they can’t go on tables or inside the restaurant.
It is optional, so a patio you loved last year can change. The South Carolina Department of Agriculture explains the rule in its FAQ.
What changed in this update
- FUEL Charleston: closed for good in December 2025.
- The Park Cafe: renamed Park & Grove, same address and owner.
- Brown Dog Deli: removed: BringFido now lists it as not allowing pets.
- The Obstinate Daughter: removed: we couldn’t find a dog policy to cite.
New this time: Bay Street Biergarten, Rita’s Seaside Grille and Le Farfalle.
Before you go
Lowcountry summers are humid well into October. Bring water, pick shade, and keep walks on hot brick and pavement short.
Flying in? Check our guides to airline pet policies before you book.
Every listing was checked on 13 October 2026 against the restaurant’s own website, the local health department or the city’s tourism office, and each card says which. Patios and policies change with the seasons, so call ahead before you go. Here is how I make my guides.
